Steve Moreland

Steve Moreland has joined the Merrimack College men’s lacrosse staff as an assistant coach, focusing on the team’s offense.

Moreland previously served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Boston University men’s lacrosse program, where he joined in August 2022 and completed his second season in 2024. At BU, he worked primarily with the team’s faceoff specialists. Under his guidance, Matthew Fritz enjoyed a career year in 2024, posting a .534 win percentage, collecting a team-high 74 ground balls, and scoring three goals.

Before his tenure at BU, Moreland had a successful 2022 season as an assistant coach at Tufts. He helped guide the Jumbos to a 19-3 record, a NESCAC title, and a trip to the national semifinals, where they fell to eventual NCAA champion RIT. Moreland coached the top-scoring offense in the country, with Tufts averaging 20.27 goals per game. He also mentored First Team All-American Mac Bredahl, who led the nation with 6.82 points per game. Four members of Moreland’s offense earned All-America honors in 2022.

Prior to his time at Tufts, Moreland served as head coach at Governor’s Academy, where the team was co-champion of the ISL in his first season (2018). He was also the head coach at Phillips Andover, his alma mater.

A native of North Andover, Mass., Moreland graduated from UMass in 1986. He captained that year’s squad, helping them advance to the NCAA quarterfinals and finish 10th in the USILA national poll.
