Internships (Fall/Spring)

Athletic Communications Internship

Description & Goals
Help us tell the stories of our student-athletes at Merrimack College through an internship in the communications department. As an intern, you will gain a well-rounded experience through sports writing, stat keeping, social media and website management. You will also help create written/video features, edit game highlights and produce live-streaming events for the department. Students should be interested in a future career in sports journalism at any level who are looking to learn/apply their digital/multimedia content creation skills.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Learn and utilize NCAA LiveStats and StatCrew, the official stat-keeping software of the NCAA, for various on-campus sports
  • Assist in maintaining and publishing content to MerrimackAthletics.com
  • Update social media platforms and provide in-game coverage for teams at athletic events
  • Organize and identify student-athlete photos
  • Update student-athlete player profiles and statistics
  • Operate Photoshop and/or InDesign to create and maintain graphics for social media platforms
  • Create game day programs for various on-campus home athletics events
  • Assist with the production of the Department's web-streaming services including pregame setup; live event production; postgame breakdown; editing, uploading and publishing highlights of contests
  • Help compile highlights/b-roll compilation and photographs
  • Aid in the creation of feature stories, both written and video
  • Write previews and recaps for assigned sports on a deadline, as well as other stories for assigned sports
  • Update and further develop/advance record books for all teams
What Will You Gain?
  • Proficient writing experience for a Division I NCAA athletic department for a variety of sports
  • Statistical production and maintenance skills via the StatCrew system
  • How to apply social media platforms to promote brand and inform public on department happenings
  • Hands-on experience in game-day productions and non-linear video editing (Final Cut/Adobe Premiere)
  • Experience working with print and television media
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports (athletic communications, broadcast, PR, etc.)
  • Students majoring in some form of communications/journalism (print/broadcast) are preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a preference given to those familiar with AP Style
  • Flexible schedule that includes ability to work home games for all athletics teams (some nights/weekends/holidays required) in addition to working regular office hours plus and independently from outside the office when responsible for written coverage for assigned sports when on deadline
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, trends, etc.
  • Previous experience in broadcast production and video editing skills are a plus but not required
  • Detail-oriented and organized with a positive and personable demeanor
  • Desktop publishing experience, preferably in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to multi-task and work within a team environment, especially on game day
  • Ability to work individually, or as part of a group while maintaining what's best for the team
Internship Requirements:
  • Should be a Junior, Senior or Post-Graduate pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university
  • Approx. 20-30 hours per week (including all work done in office, at games, and independent work)
  • Internship may also be taken as "Independent Credit Internship"; students receive official recognition via transcript notation upon successful completion of internship

Digital Media/Broadcast Production Internship

Description & Goals
Help us tell the stories of our student-athletes through an internship with the Merrimack Sports Network, which produces features, highlights, press conferences and live-streaming for the athletic department. We are looking for students with genuine interest in sports and video production.

Duties & Responsibilities:
This commitment entails becoming a vital member of the Athletic Communications Department and will be relied upon in many day-to-day and seasonal responsibilities for the department. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist with the production of the Department's web-streaming services including pregame setup; live event production; postgame breakdown; editing, uploading and publishing highlights of contests; and managing webcast full game archives
  • Shoot home sporting events for highlights/b-roll compilation
  • Edit promo videos to promote upcoming events
  • Aid in the compilation of feature stories on our student-athletes
  • Manage b-roll labeling/archiving
  • Assist with on-site live event video board production for men's/women's ice hockey games and/or other events
  • Intern will configure a schedule to work office hours in accordance with his/her internship requirements and coursework, as well as working a sensible amount of home athletic events
What Will You Gain?:
  • Hands-on experience in game-day productions, non-linear video editing (Final Cut Pro)
  • Personal video reel to help launch a career in news/sports
  • Experience working with print and television media
  • Access to practice/games at the Division I level to hone your skills in sports videography
Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:
  • Highly motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports broadcast production (college/pro)
  • Students majoring in some form of journalism - preferably broadcast journalism - are preferred
  • Previous experience in broadcast production and video editing skills are a plus but not required
  • Flexible schedule that includes nights/weekends and some holidays
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Ability to multi-task and work within a team environment, especially on game day
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor
  • Ability to work individually, or as part of a group, while maintaining what's best for the team

Graphic Design Internship

Description & Goals
Gain valuable hands-on experience in collegiate athletics in the realm of Graphic Design and Athletic Communications to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the collegiate and professional athletics industry.

Duties & Responsibilities:
• Intern will utilize Adobe CC software for the production of promotional graphics, signage and other material for the athletic department 
• Create and design social media graphics for specific teams and entire department
• Develop templates for infographics and other social media/digital graphics
• Work with marketing team to develop print-based promotional material (schedule posters, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, etc.)
• Based on proficiency, Intern will be given the freedom to express creativity and will be expected to pitch ideas for aforementioned material, as well as other projects that are pertinent to the industry (social media, signage, facility graphics, etc.)
• Intern will configure a schedule to work office hours in accordance with his/her internship requirements and course schedule

What Will You Gain?
• Creative flexibility/independence to hone graphic design skills for an audience that is passionate about sports 
• Develop marketing & promotional skills with a reputable NCAA Division I athletic department in a professional environment
• Customer service experience through interaction with public, student-athletes and athletic department staff

Marketing & Ticketing Internship

Primary Duties:

  • Assist manager of ticketing with all aspects of ticket operations at Lawler Rink, Martone-Mejail Field & Bert Hammel Court
  • Help create and execute promotional schedules for various sports
  • Create flyers, newspaper ads, newsletters, and other advertising campaigns
  • Assist with email, direct mail, and social media marketing efforts
  • Plan and execute special events for students, faculty/staff, fans, and members of the junior warrior program
  • Assist in the execution of game-day promotions, crowd interaction, and enhancing fan experience
  • Assist with the execution of game-day giveaways
  • Game night responsibilities based on schedule of ticket sales departmental activities

Qualifications:

  • Highly-motivated with a desire to pursue a career in sports
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, organized and the ability to multi-task
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software
  • Demonstrates a positive and personable demeanor

Operations Internship

Office Tasks

  • Filing game contracts
  • Filling up athletics vans with gas and air in the tires
  • Frequent evaluations of the facility and inputting of work orders
  • Pick up and drop off of athletics equipment on and off campus
  • Assist the facilities department in maintaining the athletic fields
  • Moving of equipment such as nets, benches and outfield fences

Game Days
For various games such as M/W Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, M/W Hockey, M/W Basketball, M/W Lacrosse and Softball

  • Majority of hours will come from working mid-week and weekend games, afternoons and nights
  • Act as a VIP parking attendant in the MAC Lot
  • Assist with pregame setups and breakdowns of games (speakers, scorer's tables, chairs, benches, nets, etc.)
  • Assist in game as a ball person, clock operator, stat monitor, etc.
  • Greet visiting teams and officials
  • Directing fans to different locations around the facility
  • Work with Marketing/Ticketing and Communications departments during games

2025-2026 Game-Day Student Worker Positions (hourly)

The Athletic Department is in search of Merrimack College student workers interested in assisting in a number of game-day areas of need. If jobs are available, they will be posted on Merrimack College's Handshake website via the O'Brien Center for Career Services and will be directed to fill out availability on a weekly or monthly basis for events once a candidate is accepted. 

COMMUNICATIONS GAME-DAY JOBS 

Music/In-Game DJ 

  • Control all music played at athletic events. 

PA Announcers & Play-by-Play Broadcasters 

  • Serve as PA Announcer at select home athletic events  

  • Serve as a play-by-play broadcaster for various Merrimack Athletic webcasts, including soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, women's ice hockey and softball. 

  • Tryouts are required for both PA Annoucning & Play-by-play broadcasting 

Statistics Staff 

  • Assist in the keeping of official statistics at athletic events. Students will have the opportunity to use the software that collegiate athletic communication departments nationwide utilize in keeping statistics. At the discretion of the communications staff, selected students can serve as inputters or spotters at basketball, football, ice hockey, and lacrosse games and can serve as stats inputter at soccer, field hockey, baseball and softball games. 

Webcast/Video Production Staff 

  • Specific positions include camera operators (all home games), webcast producers (soccer, volleyball, lacrosse and softball) and graphics operators (football & basketball) 

  • Assist in pregame, in-game and postgame production of all Merrimack Athletics webcasts. 

  • The department broadcasts all home athletic events (except baseball) and is searching for students possibly pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism or communications  

  • Students will have the opportunity to learn webcast production software, direct webcasts themselves, assist in breakdown and setup of equipment, and cut highlights after games. 

  • Students are also needed to operate cameras (typically 1-2 per broadcast, up to three for ice hockey games) for webcasts, as well. 

Miscellaneous Positions 

  • Instant Replay Operator (Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Women's Hockey) 

    • Serve as the instant replay official at select events 
    • Operate the instant replay equipment for in-game officials to review calls 
  • LED Graphics Operator – Basketball & Volleyball 

    • Operate the LED scorer's tables at Merrimack basketball games 
  • Goal Light & Horn Operator – Ice Hockey 

  • Video Board Operator – Ice Hockey 
    • Manage all the content that displays on the video board at Merrimack ice hockey games
