Softball Begins Six-Game Stretch With SNHU this Weekend

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College softball team play six games over the next four days, beginning with a three-game set with Southern New Hampshire University this weekend. Saturday's twinbill is scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday's game will be at 12 p.m. The first two games can be watched on television on the Fox College Sports network.  

Last Time Out:
  • The Navy and Gold opened their series with Assumption on Wednesday in Worcester, as the two teams split the first two games.
  • Merrimack trailed 4-2 heading into the fifth in the first game, before tying the game in the sixth. With the game in extra innings, the Warriors scored seven runs, all with no outs in the eighth. Junior Hannah Johnson knocked in the go-ahead run, before senior Megan Cook drove in a pair of runs with the bases loaded. Cook picked up her sixth-straight win in her sixth consecutive start. She finished the game with four strikeouts.
  • In game two, Merrimack scored in the first inning, but it was a late rally by the Greyhounds that gave the home team a 2-1 victory. Senior Courtney Zambello pitched 5.1 strong innings. Assumption scored two runs in the sixth.
'Mack Facts:
  • Merrimack enters with a 26-9 overall record and 13-6 in NE10 play. The Warriors are in second place in the Northeast Division with a record of 8-3.
  • Merrimack is currently receiving 29 votes towards the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Coaches poll. The Warriors are ranked No. 4 in the East Region of the first NCAA Division II Softball regional rankings, which was released Wednesday.
  • Cook has 295 career strikeouts and is just five strikeouts from becoming the seventh Warrior to reach 300 strikeouts in a career. She would become the first player to do so in the last 14 seasons.
  • Senior Alyssa Williamson has a team-best .434 batting average and has knocked in 23 runs. Junior Nicole Nanof leads the team with 26 RBI. Sophomore Tiffany Mangiameli has 16 stolen bases on the year in 18 attempts.
Southern New Hampshire
  • The Penmen enter the weekend with a 31-9 overall record and 14-6 in the NE10. They sit in third place in the Northeast Division with a 9-5 record. Southern New Hampshire was No. 1 in the East Region, as the NCAA released its initial Division II Softball regional rankings on Wednesday.
  • Southern New Hampshire has won three straight, including a sweep of Saint Michael's on Thursday afternoon.
  • Merrimack holds a 40-33 overall record against the Penman based on available records.
  • Erin Garczynski leads the team with a .376 average, while knocking in 30 runs. Sarah Lavallee leads the team with 10 home runs and 34 RBI.
  • In the circle, Lavallee has a 15-3 record and nine complete games. Maddy Barone is 14-5 and has 120 strikeouts.
Stonehill
  • The Warriors and Skyhawks opened their series back on April 11 in Easton, with Merrimack picking up the sweep.
  • The Skyhawks hit the road this weekend, with a single game against Franklin Pierce today, before a three-game series with Saint Michael's over the weekend.
  • Michelle Theilgard leads the offense with a .370 average, 30 hits, five home runs, and 19 RBI. Sophie Perez has 10 doubles and has knocked in 13 runs, with a .273 batting average.
  • Jennifer Mayette is 6-9 in 15 starts, with 11 complete games and 53 strikeouts. She also has a 2.63 ERA.
Assumption
  • The two teams opened the season series Wednesday with a twinbill. They split the games, with the Warriors taking game one, before Assumption took the nightcap.
  • Assumption heads to Franklin Pierce this weekend with a three-game series, before hosting Saint Anselm on Monday. The Greyhounds sit fourth in the Northeast Division.
  • Julia Mazzeo enters the weekend leading the team with a .318 average. She has knocked in eight runs. Stephanie Menard has 21 hits a team-high 10 RBI.
  • Kendal Roy and Mia Nowicki each have seven wins on the season. Roy has punched out 65 hitters, while Nowicki has 57 strikeouts, along with a 2.75 ERA.
Up Next
Merrimack will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Northeast Division rival Franklin Pierce next weekend at Martone-Mejail Field. The teams will play the first game on Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 12 p.m. with the senior day celebration happening between games. It is also alumni day for the program.
