NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Led by head coach Chris Cameron, who will enter his 19th season, the Merrimack cross country teams will open the 2012 season at the Skyhawk Relays on September 1.
In September, Cameron's squads will race in three more events including the Shacklette Invitational on September 8, the River Hawk Invitational on September 15 and at the Rivier College Invitational on September 21.
They will compete in the New England Championships on October 7 and the Northeast-10 Championship on October 20.
They will also host the annual Alumni Meet on September 29 at the Volpe Complex. The NCAA Northeast Regional's are scheduled for November 4 in Boston while the NCAA Championships are set for November 17.
In 2011, the women's team was fourth in the Northeast-10, while the men's team finished 8th overall.
"Youth would be the best word to describe this year's men's team," said Cameron. "With only one senior and two juniors, the freshmen will be called upon to make an immediate impact."
Both teams will enter the season looking to build on the improvements they made during the 2011 campaign.
"The women's team will enter the season with high hopes," stated Cameron. "Many of the girls had excellent track campaigns and this momentum should hopefully be carried forward."
The women's squad will be led by Anne Bajor (Methuen, MA), Christina Fisher (Mansfield Center, CT) and Brianna Devereaux (Londonderry, NH), each made big strides last season.
"Leading the way will be senior captain's Anne Bajor and Christina Fisher," said Cameron. "Anne ran an excellent 5K during track and has proved she is ready to do the same during cross country. Junior Briana Devereaux broke multiple school records during the track season and we will be looking for her to duplicate this success during cross country."
John Lawrence (Peabody, MA), and Luis Cruz (Lawrence, MA) will lead the way for the men, who look to stay healthy and improve in 2012.
"Leading the way for us this year will be senior captain John Lawrence," stated Cameron. "His leadership will go a long way in helping the freshmen adjust to running at the collegiate level. Sophomore Luis Cruz is the top returning runner and will hopefully carry the momentum from a strong spring track season forward into cross country.
With Merrimack adding indoor and outdoor track in 2010, most of the cross country team now trains year around and competes on the collegiate level for the first time in all three seasons.
