Sheehan Garners Daktronics All-Region First Team Honors


NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) of the Merrimack College women's volleyball team was named to the All-East Region First Team which was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of American (COSIDA), Daktronics recognizes All-Region and All-American teams in nearly all Division II sports throughout the athletic year.

Sheehan joins six others on the All-Region First Team. Franklin Pierce's Lauren Miller was named the First Team libero, while Biljana Savic from Bridgeport earned First Team setter honors. Middle's Amber Cannady from New Haven and Kaitlyn DeStefano from Adelphi were named First Team. Three outside hitters rounded off the First Team honorees, Shelby Cable of NYIT, Stephanie Sheehan of Merrimack, and Ying Shen of Bridgeport. 

The Smithtown, N.Y., native has earned multiple awards thus far in her career. This season, she was named to the COSIDA Capital One Women's Volleyball Academic All-District First Team, the Northeast-10 All-Conference First Team, and was named Northeast-10 Player of the Week three times. Also, for the first time in program history, she was named Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week. 

Sheehan lead the Warriors in every major offensive category this season. She was first in kills with 466, first in kills per set averaging 3.92, first in serving with 35 aces, and first in points with 533 (4.48 points per set). On the defensive end, she finished second on the team in digs with 328 (2.76 digs per set) as well as second in blocks with 50 (0.42 blocks per set).

Sheehan helped lead the Warriors to an impressive overall record of 17-15 and finished 9-5 in conference play. After being awarded the No. 7 seed in the Northeast-10 Championship, the Warriors defeated Saint Rose, 3-2, in the quarterfinals before defeating Stonehill College, 3-1, in the semifinals. The Navy and Gold advanced all the way to the NE-10 Finals before bowing out to defending champion New Haven in a five-set thriller before narrowly missing out on an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The Daktronics All-Region honorees are voted upon by the sports information directors of the institutions and conferences that comprise each region. First Team All-Region honorees will advance to the All-America ballot, which is slated to be announced on Dec. 11.
