Women's Volleyballs Drops 3-1 Decision to Stonehill College Tuesday Night

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass – Senior outside hitter Jackie Jones (Amherst, N.H) led the Warriors with 11 kills and eight digs, but the Merrimack College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Stonehill College Tuesday night at Hammel Court.

How It Happened
In the opening set, Stonehill took an early 2-0 lead before the Warriors went on a 3-0 run to tie the game at 3-all. Midway through the set, Merrimack managed to go on a 4-0 run after a kill from junior Aliya Winker (Arlington, Va.) to bring the score to 15-11. Merrimack's offense started to come together and managed to end the set off a huge block by freshman Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and junior Corrine Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass.), 26-24.

The Skyhawks opened the second frame, 2-1, before going on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 7-2. With the momentum on the visitor's side, the Warriors slowly rallied back to bring the score to 23-16 causing Stonehill to take a timeout. After the timeout, Stonehill came out firing and took the second set, 25-16.

In the third set, Merrimack took a 7-4 lead before Stonehill went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 7-all. Merrimack and Stonehill battle point-by-point but Stonehill took the frame, 25-19.

In the final match, the Skyhawks took an early 10-3 lead over the Warriors. Merrimack pulled together and brought the score within four points. After a kill from Jackie Jones, Merrimack went on a 3-0 run to bring the score to 22-20. Stonehill kept it together and took the final frame, 25-21.

Defensively, sophomore Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) led the way with 24 digs and three service aces. Junior outside hitter Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 kills, two service aces, five digs, and a block asssits. Stuhr finished the night with 35 assists and six digs, while junior Corrine Gosselin and junior Aliya Winker tallied a team-high three block assists.

A Closer Look

  • As a team, Merrimack finished the night with a .108 hitting percentage, while Stonehill averaged a .257 hitting percentage.
  • Skyhawk Delia Philips recorded a double-double against the Navy and Gold with 16 kills and 14 digs.
  • Both teams tallied 14 total blocks on the night.
  • Sheehan and Jocelyn McLain (Fort Collins, Colo.) both chimed in with two assists.
  • Merrimack finished with 42 kills, 40 assists, 65 digs, and 14 blocks.
