Women’s Volleyball Blanks Assumption on Tuesday Night, 3-0

SHEEHAN AND CAIN HELP LEAD TEAM EFFORT AS MERRIMACK SWEEPS ASSUMPTION

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman setter Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) averaged 9.93 assists, 2.20 digs and three kills and junior outside hitter Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit .435 as the Merrimack College women's volleyball team defeated Assumption College Tuesday night at Hammel Court, 3-0.

How It Happened
Freshman Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) led the Warriors with 14 kills and four digs. Sheehan contributed 12 kills and eight digs, while junior Corrine Gosselin (Lawrence, Mass.) contributed six kills and three digs. Sophomore setter Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) added 24 digs and a service ace and Stuhr ran the offense with 42 assists and five digs.

The Warriors cruised through the first the competition in the first set by a score of 25-11. Assumption tested the Warriors in the second set at 16-15. After a huge kill from Cain, Merrimack went on a 6-0 run to take a strong lead and secure the second set, 25-16.

The third set began as a back and forth struggle with both teams tied 15-all before the Navy and Gold rattled off five quick points and never looked back to take the final set and match 25-17.

A Closer Look

  • As a team, the Warriors posted 48 kills and a .257 kill percentage against the Greyhounds.
  • Senior defensive specialist Taciane Santos (Everett, Mass.) led the Warriors' defense with three blocks.
  • Both Stuhr and Sheehan posted 32 out of the 65 points to help lead Merrimack to victory.
  • Assumption posted 15 kills and a .024 kill percentage. 

Up Next
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5th when they play host to Northeast-10 opponent Southern Connecticut for its conference season opener. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
