NORTH ANDOVER, MA - The Merrimack volleyball team claimed a 3-2 victory over New Brunswick Friday evening at Volpe Gym in an exhibition match.
The Warriors took an early lead with a 25-21 win in the first set. Merrimack continued its strong play with a 25-20 result in set two to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The Reds battled back to take the third frame 25-19, cutting the deficit to 2-1. New Brunswick dominated the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set, rolling 25-16 in the game.
In the fifth set, the Warriors looked revitalized as they erupted out to a 3-0 lead. The Reds would not go quietly as they clawed back into the set to tie it at 5-5 and keep it close the rest of the way.
Merrimack ultimately came away with the fifth-set victory to capture the match, avenging a 3-0 loss to New Brunswick a year ago.
"We played extremely well in the first two sets but we fell apart in the third and fourth sets. I was proud with the way we stepped up our game and pieced it back together to get the win," said head coach TJ Hajjar. "We really needed a win tonight and our team went out there and showed a lot of intensity and determination. I thought our defense was really good as was our communication."
Merrimack resumes Northeast-10 Conference play October 11 with a road match at Franklin Pierce.
