Women’s Track and Field Travels to Springfield College For Springfield College Invitational
SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Merrimack women's track and field team competed on Saturday afternoon at the Springfield College Invitational.
The Warriors' usual trio was at it again in the 100 meter dash event. Desiree DeLeon (Salem, Mass.) finished in 3rd place while classmate Mary Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) placed 8th. Both earned points for Merrimack's composite team score. DeLeon finished with a time of 13.43 seconds and Murphy finished at 13.71 seconds. Leah Hall (Lynn, Mass.) rounded out the three with a time of 14.06 seconds. Hall also finished 8th overall in the 200 meter dash with a finishing time of 28.78 seconds.
Merrimack's most successful event for the day was the 1500 meter run. The Warriors placed three runners in the top seven and four in the top 14. The always dependable Anne Bajor (Methuen, Mass.) and Briana Devereaux (Londonderry, NH) finished 3rd and 4th respectively for the Warriors with finishing times of 4:51.08 and 4:57.73. Kelsey Grimmer (Shelton, Conn.) finished right behind her fellow teammates with a time of 5:03.57, good for 7th place. Kayla Morong (Topsham, ME) finished in 14th in the event with a time of 5:21.73.
In the 5000 meter run, sophomore Fiona Coleman (Windsor, Conn.) was excellent placing in the top five of the event. Her finishing time was 19:58.19. In the 3000 meter steeplechase, senior Ashley Sarris (Shelton, Conn.) was even better placing 1st overall. Her time was 11:54.16. She and Coleman combined to earn Merrimack 14 points toward their final team score.
In the relay events, both of Merrimack's teams earned points. In the 4x100 meter event, the team of Hall, DeLeon, Murphy and Nichole Hicks (Plymouth, Mass.) finished 6th earning the Warriors three team points. In the 4x400 meter relay, Bajor, Devereaux, Morong, and DeLeon placed 4th with a time of 4:20.93. That finish earned the Warriors five points.
Finally, in field events Ashley Wright (Somersworth, NH) and Janelle Clark (Springfield, Mass.) competed well for the Warriors. Wright finished 3rd in the high jump event with a leap of 1.45 meters. Clark registered a distance of 10.70 meters in the triple jump. Overall, the Warriors placed 7th in the Invitational with a combined team score of 45.50 points.
Next, the Warriors will compete in the Northeast-10 Championships on Friday May 4.
