SOUTH EASTON, MA- Freshman Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) of the Merrimack women's tennis team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Messina went 5-1 on the week as she posted a 3-0 mark in singles play and a 2-1 record in doubles action as the Warriors owned a 1-2 record on the week.
The rookie picked up a pair of wins in Merrimack's loss at Bentley and win at American International. Messina prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at the top singles spot and teamed with Erin McMahon (Wilmington, MA) to capture a 9-8 (0) victory at the No. 3 doubles slot against the Falcons.
Messina posted a pair of shutout victories against the Yellow Jackets to help the Warriors secure a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The rookie partnered with McMahon to earn an 8-0 win at the No. 2 position before cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles spot
The freshman tallied Merrimack's lone point in an 8-1 loss at Stonehill in the regular season finale. Messina triumphed in a three-set thriller at the No. 1 position. She won the first set 6-1 before dropping set two 6-2. The rookie rebounded to pick up a 6-1 victory in the deciding third set.
On the year, Messina boasts a 15-5 record at the No. 1 singles position and a 16-6 overall mark.
Messina and the Warriors earned the No. 6 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and will visit third-seeded Southern NH in the quarterfinals Wednesday, April 18.
Merrimack posted an 8-5 mark in league action this season while sporting a 9-13 overall record heading into the postseason.
