Women’s Tennis Falls to #45 Southern NH, 8-0

NORTH ANDOVER, MA- The Merrimack women's tennis team suffered an 8-0 loss to #45 Southern NH in the final home match of the regular season Saturday afternoon. The Warriors slip to 8-11 on the year and 7-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Penmen improve to 13-5 overall and 10-1 in league matches.

"We battled hard against a good team today and we played some tight matches," said head coach Sean Tully.

The visitors claimed all three doubles points to hold a 3-0 lead. Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) and Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) dropped an 8-5 decision at the No. 2 slot. Katie Veasey (Atkinson, NH) and Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) fell 8-5 at the third position.

Hole suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss at the No. 2 spot while Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the third slot. Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, NH) fell 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 position and Erin McMahon (Wilmington, MA) absorbed a 6-1, 6-0 loss at the sixth spot.

Fitzgerald bounced back from dropping the first set 6-2 to prevail in the second 7-5. The junior was edged 11-9 in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 5 position. Messina dropped a narrow 7-6 result in the first set with a 7-2 tiebreaker-loss at the No. 1 spot. The rookie was trailing 2-1 in the second frame when the match was suspended due to darkness.

Merrimack will hit the road to face Bentley April 10.
