Women’s Tennis Sweeps Saint Rose, 9-0

MELROSE, MA - The Merrimack women's tennis team defeated The College of Saint Rose 9-0 Friday afternoon at the Bellevue Country Club. The Warriors rise to 8-10 overall and 7-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Golden Knights dip to 4-7 on the year and in the league.

"We played extremely well today in all aspects and I am very proud of the way we battled," said head coach Sean Tully. "We have just four matches left until the playoffs and I am pleased with our efforts lately and we will look to keep things going in the positive direction."

Merrimack claimed all three doubles matches to lead 3-0 at the midway point. The Warriors' top pair of Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, RI) and Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) prevailed 8-2. Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) and Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) earned an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 position. Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Erin McMahon (Wilmington, MA) captured an 8-1 win at the third slot.

Merrimack completed the sweep with six singles victories on the day.

Messina rebounded to triumph 10-2 in a third-set super-tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets at the top spot. Hole cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the second position while Garvey breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 slot.

Barnes earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 position. Fitzgerald and McMahon each prevailed in eight-game pro-sets on the day.

The Warriors will host Southern NH in the final home event of the regular season April 7.
