Women’s Tennis Breezes By New Haven, 9-0

MELROSE, MA- The Merrimack women's tennis team blanked New Haven, 9-0, Friday afternoon at Bellevue Country Club. The Warriors improve to 6-9 on the year with a 5-1 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Chargers drop to 0-9 overall and 0-8 in the league with the loss.

"We battled hard today and earned a very good win," said first-year head coach Sean Tully. "We'll look to keep up our strong play this weekend with two important matches."

Merrimack captured three victories in doubles action to sport a 3-0 advantage at the end of pairs play.

At the No. 1 position, Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) and Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) posted an 8-3 victory. Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, NH) and Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) claimed an 8-2 win at the second doubles spot. Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) and Katie Veasey (Atkinson, NH) picked up an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 slot.

The Warriors secured their third-straight conference victory with a sweep of the six singles matches.

Messina and Barnes each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at the first and fourth positions, respectively. Hole earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 spot. Garvey prevailed 6-2, 6-0 at the third slot. Fitzgerald and Erin McMahon (Wilmington, MA) both triumphed in eight-game pro-sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

Merrimack will hit the road for a pair of Northeast-10 Conference matches, starting with a tilt at Pace March 31 before visiting Adelphi April 1.
