Women’s Tennis Drops Road Match at #36 Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, FL- The Merrimack women's tennis team absorbed a 9-0 loss at #36 Florida Tech Friday afternoon in its final match in the Sunshine State. The Warriors slip to 4-9 overall while the Panthers rise to 11-4 on the season.

"Today's match was a tough fought match against a very good team," said head coach Sean Tully. "Overall, I thought our trip to Florida was successful. We played a lot of quality opponents which will benefit us as the season goes on."

Florida Tech captured all three doubles matches to hold a 3-0 lead in the match. Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) and Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, NH) suffered an 8-1 loss at the No. 2 position. Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) fell 8-0 at the top slot while Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) and Katie Veasey (Atkinson, NH) also dropped an 8-0 decision.

In singles play, the Panthers swept all six matches to claim their seventh-straight win and fourth-consecutive 9-0 result.

Messina endured a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the top spot to #11 Katarina Huba. Hole dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at the No. 2 position while Veasey fell 6-2, 6-4 at the sixth slot.

Merrimack will resume play in the Northeast-10 Conference with a road contest at Franklin Pierce March 28.
