Shakee Messina Earns NE-10 Player, Rookie of the Week Accolades

SOUTH EASTON, MA- Freshman Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) of the Merrimack women's tennis team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. This marks the third time this season Messina has garnered Rookie of the Week honors while taking home her first career Player of the Week nod.

Messina claimed a pair of wins as the Warriors defeated Saint Anselm 8-1 March 11. The freshman teamed with Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) to post an 8-5 victory at the top doubles position.

Messina edged the Hawks' Alexandra Lawrence 7-3 in a first-set tiebreaker before prevailing 6-1 in the second set.

The rookie is sporting a 7-6 singles record on the year with a 6-2 mark in dual matches. Messina also owns a 5-3 doubles record on the season.

Merrimack boasts a 4-4 overall record with a 3-1 mark in the Northeast-10. The Warriors will host Chestnut Hill in a non-league match March 18 at 2 pm.
