SYRACUSE, NY – The Merrimack women's tennis team defeated Le Moyne 7-2 Saturday. The Warriors improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Dolphins slide to 0-3 overall and in league action.
Merrimack claimed a pair of doubles wins to hold a 2-1 lead at the start of singles action.
Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) captured an 8-6 victory at the top doubles position. Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) and Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) rolled to an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles slot.
The Warriors won five of six singles matches to seal their second win of the season.
Messina cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the top spot. Garvey breezed by Le Moyne's Rebecca Black 6-1, 6-0 in the second singles match.
Fitzgerald and Hole each prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at the third and fourth singles slots, respectively. Alyx Barnes (Portsmouth, NH) triumphed with an 8-2 result at the No. 6 position.
"The team played really well today to get our second conference win of the season," said head coach Sean Tully. "We have been playing hard all fall and it is paying off and we will look to keep this up in the spring."
Merrimack will travel back to the Empire State next weekend to face Niagara October 8 and Roberts Wesleyan October 9.
