Women's Tennis 2009-10: Year in Review
The 2009-10 women’s tennis season, which began in mid-September, came to a close in the Conference quarterfinals against the eventual Northeast-10 Champion Southern New Hampshire University Penmen. The Warriors finished with a 6-13 record overall after a tough non-Conference schedule against multiple NCAA tournament teams. Merrimack snagged the eighth seed in the Conference tournament following a 6-7 regular season mark.
Leading the Warriors were seniors Cristina Lucin (Wesley Chapel, FL) and Caitlin Dunn (Middleton, MA), who each claimed all-Conference recognition at season’s end.
Lucin finished 11-1 at the No. 1 singles position and 7-4 at No. 1 doubles with Dunn to earn all-Northeast-10 singles second team honors for a second straight season. Lucin graduated on Sunday with a 3.97 GPA in Criminology and intends to pursue her doctorate at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst beginning later this year.
“All of Cristina’s hard work and dedication to the team paid off throughout the year as she was a leader on the court for us,” said Merrimack head coach Chris Stevens. “She works hard in all aspects of her life so it is no surprise she has excelled on the court.”
Dunn was not only the captain of Merrimack, but received the F. Paul Bogan Memorial Sportsmanship Award from the Northeast-10 Conference. In addition to her 7-4 record in doubles competition, Dunn recorded a 9-4 mark at No. 2 singles to anchor the Warriors.
“Caitlin is an incredible team leader and looks after her teammates. She brings a lot of pride and respect to the Merrimack name and has set a superb example for the underclassmen.”
Showing promise for the future of Merrimack women’s tennis, freshman Siobhan Licudine (Mansfield, MA) tallied a 6-5 record in singles play, including 5-3 in Northeast-10 competition. Sophomores Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) and Kylie Waddington (South Glastonbury, CT) also showed strength, picking up five wins each in singles Conference play this season.
