NORTH ANDOVER, MA - In 2008-09, both tennis teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time both teams were selected in the same season. Led by Chris Stevens, both teams will look to continue that success in 2009-10.
The men's tennis team, which won a school-record 14 matches and advanced to the Northeast-10 championship for the first time ever, reached its second-straight and second-ever NCAA Tournament, picking up its first-ever tournament win.
They will open the season at Le Moyne on September 12 at 10 a.m. The men's tennis team will play two conference matches in the fall, with the other match at Southern New Hampshire on October 2.
They will also participate in the Wheaton College Invitational, the ITA Regionals and the Stonehill Invitational before concluding the fall season against Division I Holy Cross on October 10.
"We will miss Steve Viglione, John Seaward and Adam Wilding, who helped build up the program the past four years, but we have a great returning core of players and some additional help with our freshman class," said Stevens, the two-time men's tennis Northeast-10 Coach of the Year. "I think we will be right at the top of the conference competing for a top spot."
The Warriors do return Rishi Rajpal (New Delhi, India), who was the NE-10 Freshman of the Year last season, as well as Max Eppley (Malaga, Spain), Tim McHugh (Edgartown, MA), Liam Hoare (West Newbury, MA), Jon Ravenelle (North Andover, MA) and Sean Pahler (Rumson, NH).
The women will also open at Le Moyne on September 12 and will play conference foes Saint Rose (Sept. 20) and New Haven (Sept. 27) at home in the fall.
They will also battle Holy Family and Holy Cross and will participate in the ITA Regionals and the Fairfield University Invitational.
"Our top three players from last year are back and will really support this young team," said Stevens. "With their leadership and a few new faces, this team will be very competitive and surprise a lot of teams, even with the loss of five players to graduation."
The women's tennis team was selected to its first-ever NCAA Tournament last season, while seeing five players earn all-conference honors, including Christina Lucin (Wesley Chapel, FL), who was an all-conference singles and doubles selection.
Other notable returnees include Caitlin Dunn (Middleton, MA), Amanda Carroll (Tewksbury, MA), Stellina Saia (Wakefield, MA), Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA), and Kylie Waddington (South Glastonbury, CT).
