Women's Soccer Returns to Campus to Kick Off 2014
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After advancing to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for a league-record 29th straight season last year, the Merrimack College women's soccer team is back on the pitch to open up preseason camp this week.
Head Coach Gabe Mejail and the Warriors compiled a 10-6-2 (8-4-2 NE-10) record last season led by a potent offense that scored at least three goals in five contests and had four players tally at least five goals or more. The team scored 34 times in 18 games.
This fall the Warriors will retool with several new faces after the team graduated five starters this past spring.
Leading scorer junior Jenna Savi (Dedham, Mass.) is back after accumulating seven goals and 16 points in her second season with the Navy and Gold. Sophomore Alana Vecchiarello (Peabody, Mass.) finished tied for second on the team with five goals after appearing in every game as a freshman. Anchoring the midfield will be senior Sarah Coakley (Medway, Mass.) who returns after an NE-10 First Team All-Conference season. Coakley finished second on the Warriors with five assists and added two game-winning goals.
The captains for the upcoming season will be seniors Katie Bresciani (Hopedale, Mass.), Marissa Maiolo (Monroe, Conn.) and junior Deirdre Roberts (Braintree, Mass.). Bresciani brings an attacking presence to the midfield after an eight-point performance in 2013. Another midfielder, Maiolo appeared in 17 of the 18 contests last season as a junior while Roberts also appeared in 17 games as a sophomore.
Mejail will be looking to replace two-year starting goalkeeper Nicole Curtis, who started every game for the Warriors a year ago. The returner with the most experience is junior Meghan Gulbrandsen (Haverhill, Mass.) who appeared in three games last season for Merrimack posting a 1.15 goals-against average and a .667 save percentage.
Merrimack will host the Marriott Kickoff Classic to begin the year, opening up with Dowling on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.
