NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Two Merrimack women's soccer student-athletes were recognized for both their athletic and academic prowess on Thursday, as junior striker Danielle Dion (Grosvenordale, Conn.) and senior back Krista Fazio (Syosett, N.Y.) were named to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-East Region Teams, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The duo found a spot among a group of nearly 100 student-athletes in the East Region at the Division II and III levels. Honorees required at least a 3.25 GPA to qualify in addition to distinguishing themselves on the pitch, as well.
Dion produced an astonishing 1.64 points per game through just 14 games before succumbing to a season-ending injury. She posted a team-best 23 points in that span on a side-high 10 goals and three assists. The Grosvenordale, Conn., native posted a 3.41 GPA through the fall semester.
Fazio was the anchor of a Merrimack defense that limited opponents to only 1.02 goals per game and a meager .067 shooting percentage. The Long Islander appeared in and started all 20 games for Merrimack while posting her first two career points – both assists – to finish the season with two points and six shot attempts. She also posted a 3.41 GPA.
Dion was a member of the All-East Region Fourth Team, while Fazio was an Honorable Mention recipient.
