Women's Soccer Returns to Campus
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Aiming for the program's 29th consecutive winning season this year, head coach Gabe Mejail and the Merrimack College women's soccer team returned to action today, as the Warriors officially begin the 2012 campaign with their first practice later tonight.
Under the tutelage of Mejail, the winningest head coach in the history of Division II women's soccer, the Warriors enjoyed yet another successful season in 2011, posting a 16-4-2 overall record that saw trips to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game as well as advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Based on the talent that Mejail will return in 2012, the expectations are as high as ever on campus. All four leading scorers from last season will return this year, led by junior forward Danielle Dion (Grosvenordale, Conn.) and classmate Jenna Zechner (Billerica, Mass.). Both shared the team lead in goals scored with eight apiece, while Zecher's 19 points ranked most on the squad.
The Warriors have nearly two weeks to prepare for their first test, as the team will compete in the Dowling College Tournament to open the season. Merrimack will first face Molloy on Friday, Aug. 31 before facing host Dowling on Sunday, Sept. 2.
The Warriors will wrap up their three-game road trip to start the season with a match at Queens on Sept. 5 before hosting NE-10 foe Southern Connecticut in their home opener on Sept. 9.
