Six All-Conference Honorees Lead #14 Women’s Soccer into NE-10 Semis; Peacock Defensive Player of the Year
SOUTH EASTON, MA- The #14 Merrimack women's soccer team earned six Northeast-10 All-Conference accolades on the eve of its Northeast-10 Conference Tournament semifinal match against Southern NH.
Jessica Peacock (Hopedale, MA) was named the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was an All-Conference first team selection for the second-straight year. Joining Peacock on the first team is Danielle Dion (North Grosvenordale, CT), a second-time All-Conference honoree.
Kiley Horne (Scituate, MA) and Sarah Coakley (Medway, MA) were both selected to the Northeast-10 All-Conference third team. This marks the second-consecutive season that Horne earned a spot on the third team. Coakley and Katie Bresciani (Hopedale, MA) were selected to the All-Rookie team.
Peacock has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week three times this fall. She has netted three goals and registered three assists, good for nine points. The senior co-captain has anchored Merrimack's backline that has conceded just 13 goals all season.
Dion ranks second on the squad with 14 points on six markers and two helpers this year. She has notched a pair of game-winning tallies and converted her only penalty kick attempt. The sophomore striker has started all 15 games in which she has appeared in this season.
Horne owns a 15-2-1 record between the pipes this fall for the Warriors to go along with a 0.68 goals-against average. She has posted nine shutouts this season and is carrying a five-match shutout streak into Merrimack's semifinal showdown against Southern NH. Horne has started all 18 contests in goal and has logged nearly 1,600 minutes played. She was recognized as the Northeast-10 Conference Goalie of the Week once this season.
Coakley has picked up three assists in her first collegiate season. She recorded her first career helper in the Warriors' 2-1 victory at Saint Anselm September 14. The rookie is one of seven players on the squad to start all 18 games this fall.
Bresciani ranks third on the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She found the back of the net twice in her first collegiate game as she buried both scores in Merrimack's season-opening 2-1 overtime-win at Molloy. Bresciani has seen action in all 18 games this year with 11 starts to her credit.
The Warriors are 15-2-1 overall entering the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Merrimack claimed the second-seed in the tournament for the second-straight season with an 11-2-1 league mark.
Gabe Mejail's squad defeated seventh-seeded Pace 2-0 in the quarterfinals and will host Southern NH, the sixth-seed, in the semifinals.
The Warriors topped the Penmen 2-1 at home in the regular season to extend their winning-streak to 10 games. Dion scored in the fifth minute of the match and the visitors' tied it up at 1-1 midway through the first half. Jamie Alnwick (Groton, MA) tallied the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in the contest.
This marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams in the postseason. Merrimack holds the Northeast-10 Conference record for most postseason wins with 26.
Jenna Zechner (Billerica, MA) leads the Warriors with 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Merrimack has had 10 different players notch game-winning tallies this season.
