MERRIMACK FINISHES 26-OVER, FINISHING 24 STROKES CLEAR OF HOLY CROSS
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Guided by a first-place finish from senior Jessica Ngui (Richardson, Texas) and a runner-up performance from junior Ali Reed (Westborough, Mass.), the Merrimack College women's golf team successfully defended its 2012 crown on Saturday by winning the Wellesley Invitational at Nehoiden Golf Course.
Score: Merrimack 314, Holy Cross 342, Wellesley 358
Location: Nehoiden Golf Course | Wellesley, Mass.
How It Happened
Starting off the new season the way they left off the end of 2012-13, Ngui and Reed shot three-over and four-over 147 to pace the Navy and Gold, as both players finished atop the field of 15 players. As a team, the Warriors cleared the next-closest team, Holy Cross, by 28 strokes, finishing 26-over. The top-four of each team's five competitors factored into the overall score.
The title was the program's fourth victory in its three-year history; last year, the Warriors won three events last year, including the season-opening event at Wellesley and, more importantly, the ECAC Championships in April.
What They Said
Head Coach Nick Crovetti: "Today was a great day in many ways. I am very proud of this group, and it was great to see all of our players compete at Wellesley College. Our team score of 314 is low for Nehoiden Golf Course and also in tournament play. We are looking forward to a few more weeks of practice before our next DII in-region event at Indianapolis."
