Women's Crew Looks to Make Major Strides in Second Year of Competition

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Head Coach Tim Desrosiers announced the fall women's crew schedule, which kicks off on September 30 as the Warriors will travel to UMass Lowell to race in the Textile River Regatta.

"This fall we are adding our first big bunch of recruits," said second year head coach Tim Desrosiers. "We signed eight and have several walk-ons with a wide range of experience and athletic backgrounds coming on board as well.  Last year we finished up by taking home Silver at the New England Championships in the Freshman/Novice 4+ category and we are looking to build off of that momentum.  We realize that this year our competition will be a lot harder as we compete on the varsity level but I am very confident in this group of young ladies."

The Warriors next event will be the New Hampshire Championships in Pembroke, NH on October 14. Merrimack will wrap up its three race fall with a race on October 27 at Head of the Fish in Saratoga, NY.

"We are hopeful to participate in the Head of the Charles Regatta in Cambridge on October 20-21," stated Desrosiers. "It would be our first time competing in the event and it would be a great experience for the girls as well as great exposure for the program.  My expectation for our fall races is that we race as hard as we can each time and that we learn and grow as a team regardless of whether we win or lose."

Merrimack will look to build on a very successful first season of competition in 2011-12 with hard work and dedication.

"It's all about fundamentals and fitness this fall," said Desrosiers. "We have got to really hammer home the basics and get everyone adjusted to life at the collegiate varsity level.  We will race a few times this fall to build experience and confidence to prepare the team for the offseason and our championship segment in the spring."

The Warriors have seven returners to a second year team that earned a silver medal in their last event of the season last season, the New England Championships. Jessie Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass.) is the lone returner from the silver medal winning team but Kaylee McKenna (Georgetown, Texas) and Jenna Zechner (Billerica, Mass.) showed great improvement at the end of last season and will be key contributors this season.

"While the majority of our team this fall is made up of freshmen, we do have a small but strong core of returning girls," stated Desrosiers. "Jessie Eichel is our only returning athlete from our silver medal boat last spring and also attended the Captains Judgment day in July.  I expect her to bring that experience home to the rest of the girls.  We also got quite the boost last year from a pair of dual-sport athletes in Kaylee McKenna and Jenna Zechner.  They both brought a ton of energy and competitive collegiate experience to the table and I look forward to seeing them take their next steps this year."

Merrimack trains at the Abe Bashara Boathouse in Lawrence, a facility situated on the Merrimack River and operated by Greater Lawrence Community Boating, Inc.
