Lowell, Mass. - The Merrimack women's crew team took home a 1st place finish in the novice four race on Saturday afternoon at the UMass Lowell Regatta. The Warriors novice eight boat took home a 2nd place finish as well.
Today was Merrimack's first opportunity to go head to head with a conference team (UML) and first race against multiple opponents.
The Women's four had a very impressive victory taking first place with a time of 8:05.4 over University of Vermont (D1), Bowdoin College, U Mass-Lowell, Bryant University, and Bowdoin College-B.
"The women's four race was very exciting to watch,' Said head coach Tim Desrosiers. "At the halfway point the girls were leading, but only by about a seat. It was very impressive to see them pull away in the final 500 meters of the race. Its something we've been talking about and working on in practice...finding that extra gear at the end of the race to finish it off and secure a win."
The women's eight suffered its first loss of the season to UVM, but managed to take second place in the race over Bryant University. Notably, the Warriors time of 7:30.0 in the novice 8+ event was comparable to the times that conference rivals UML (7:30.7) and Franklin Pierce (8:05.9) put up in the Varsity 8+ event.
Merrimack will return to the water next Saturday, April 28 for their fourth regatta of the season.
