Women's Basketball Picked Third in NE-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division, according to the Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league Tuesday.

Bentley University received 105 points and 14 first-place votes to take the top spot in the Poll. Last year, the Falcons won their third straight Northeast-10 Championship before falling in the NCAA East Region title game to Dowling College. Entering the 2013-14 season, Bentley ranks No. 1 in Division II in the country.

Stonehill College finished second in the poll with 92 points and one first-place vote while Merrimack was selected third, a year after upsetting Stonehill in the midst of their magical postseason run to the NE-10 Semifinals as the No. 10 seed in the tournament. 

Northeast-10 rival Franklin Pierce finished fourth with 60 points in the voting. Assumption (58), Southern New Hampshire (44), Saint Michael's (26), and Saint Anselm (20) round out the eight-team Northeast Division poll.

In the Southwest Division, Adelphi University received 88 total points and 10 total points. American International finished second to Adelphi with 60 total points and a first-place vote. The University of New Haven and Pace University were tied for the third-place spot, with the Setters receivingthree first-place votes.

The College of Saint Rose recieves 53 total points and a first-place vote to place fifth, while Southern Connecticut (32) and Le Moyne (22) round out the bottom two spots in the Southwest Division.

The Warriors finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 17-12 and a conference mark of 11-11 after winning just five games the year before, boasting one of the country's best season-to-season turnarounds in the process. The Warriors return nine members from the 2012-13 squad and welcome two freshmen and a sophomore transfer to the bench.

Merrimack opens up their 2013-14 schedule on Saturday, Nov. 9, when it travels Pennsylvania to battle Mansfield University in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m.
