Schatzlein Shines for Warriors, Named NE-10 Freshman of the Week

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Helping the Merrimack women’s
basketball team (7-9, 5-6 NE-10) to a pair of wins this past week
over Le Moyne and Adelphi, freshman forward Kelly Schatzlein
(Tolland, CT) was named the Northeast-10 Conference
Freshman of the Week.
Schatzlein averaged 11 points and eight boards in the wins, while
swatting a season-high three blocks and snagging two steals against
Le Moyne in a 63-55 triumph.
At home versus Adelphi, the freshman made 7-of-10 from the line
and scored 13 points to help Merrimack to a third straight win and
five of their last six. The 5-1 run is the best six-game span for
the Warriors since 2004-05 when Merrimack advanced to the NCAA
Final Four. That year, they started the season winning 11-of-12 on
the way to a 29-6 mark.
On the season, Schatzlein has averaged 7.4 points and just as many rebounds per game. With the 7.4 rebounds per game, she ranks 10th in the Northeast-10 while topping all freshmen in that category. She is also seventh in the Conference for blocked shots (1.25/game) and second among first-years (Jill Beranger [New Haven]: 1.5/game).
Schatzlein and the Warriors return to action at home against the College of Saint Rose looking for a fourth straight regular season victory on Wednesday against the Golden Knights at 5:30pm in Volpe Gym.
