NORTH ANDOVER, MA- The Merrimack softball team suffered a pair of losses to Assumption at Warrior Diamond Friday afternoon. The Warriors slide to 17-23 on the year and 11-17 in the Northeast-10 Conference after falling 11-1 and 10-0. The Greyhounds improve to 28-13 overall and 21-7 in league play.
Tawny Palmieri (Peabody, MA) led Merrimack with a pair of hits on the day, including a solo homer. Allison Berthiaume (Berkley, MA), Jaclyn Giovannini (Plano, TX), Jenn Post (Orange, CT) and Alex Gallant (Salem, NH) all collected one base knock in the twinbill.
Assumption grabbed an early 4-0 lead in game one, tallying four runs in the top of the first inning. Lauren Medeiros launched a three-run homer to left to open the scoring. Ashley Impagliazzo laced an RBI single through the left side of the infield with two outs.
The Greyhounds tacked on a run in the second to claim a 5-0 advantage. Tanya Robidoux blasted a one-out solo home run to left.
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the third as Palmieri hammered her team-leading 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to left with two away in the inning.
The visitors plated three runs in the fourth to push their lead to 8-1. Melissa Jalbert picked up a two-run home run after Robidoux led off the frame with a single. Medeiros followed with a solo homer to center for Assumption's third run of the inning.
The Greyhounds posted three scores in the sixth to capture an 11-1 margin. Medeiros led off the frame with her third home run of the game. Jess DiPilato notched a two-run shot to centerfield after Nikki Boris followed Medeiros with a single.
In the nightcap, Assumption jumped out to a 3-0 edge with a three-run first. Boris, Marissa Palumbo and Andrea Crowley all registered RBI singles to center in the opening frame for the Greyhounds.
Robidoux drove in a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to expand the visitors' lead to 5-0. Palumbo led off the third with a solo shot to right and Robidoux added an RBI single to the gap in left center later in the frame.
Assumption pushed three runs across the plate in the fourth to grab a 10-0 lead. With two outs in the inning, Medeiros came around to score on an error and Impagliazzo followed an RBI single up the middle. Crowley laced an RBI single down the left field line to drive in Impagliazzo from second.
Alie Thomas (Bedford, MA) started game two in the pitcher's circle for the Warriors and worked the first two innings while earning two strikeouts. Deardorff came on in the third with no outs and tossed three innings while striking out five.
Merrimack will close out the 2012 campaign Saturday, April 21 with a home doubleheader against American International on Senior Day.
