Softball Swept by C.W. Post Thursday; Warriors Battle New Haven Saturday
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack softball team dropped a
pair of games Thursday to C.W. Post, losing 7-0 in game one and
10-0 in game two.
In the first game, Pioneer starter Christina Berardi two-hit the
Warriors, improving to 9-5 with her fifth career shutout while
striking out four.
Warrior starter Jill Gagnon (10-5) matched her
pitch-for-pitch through six innings, as the senior allowed just an
unearned run in the fourth, before C.W. Post exploded for six runs
on six hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Kelsey Ellis and Kara Melillo
each had singles in the loss, snapping Merrimack’s four-game
home winning streak.
In the second game, Sarah Kiser took a perfect game into the fifth
before Gagnon dropped a single down the right-field line. Kiser
struck out seven, while throwing her eighth complete game of the
year to improve to 8-1 on the season.
The Pioneers started quickly getting two runs in the first and one
in the third off Warrior starter Atlee Cahill.
Leadoff hitter Melissa Medina had three infield singles in the
first four innings, leading the offense, while Shannon Kulnis took
Cahill deep to lead off the fifth. Medina then drove home the
Pioneers’ fifth run with a RBI single up the middle in the
seventh, her fourth knock of the day. Ashley Marchese then followed
with a bases-clearing double, extending the lead to 9-0.
Cahill (2-3) threw her fourth complete game of the season, striking
out four, in the loss.
The seventh inning killed the Warriors all day, as C.W. Post scored
11 times in the final inning in both games combined.
Merrimack (19-11, 12-4 NE-10) returns to Warrior Field Saturday
when New Haven comes to town for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
