Softball Swept by C.W. Post Thursday; Warriors Battle New Haven Saturday

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday to C.W. Post, losing 7-0 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

In the first game, Pioneer starter Christina Berardi two-hit the Warriors, improving to 9-5 with her fifth career shutout while striking out four.

Warrior starter Jill Gagnon (10-5) matched her pitch-for-pitch through six innings, as the senior allowed just an unearned run in the fourth, before C.W. Post exploded for six runs on six hits in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Kelsey Ellis and Kara Melillo each had singles in the loss, snapping Merrimack’s four-game home winning streak.

In the second game, Sarah Kiser took a perfect game into the fifth before Gagnon dropped a single down the right-field line. Kiser struck out seven, while throwing her eighth complete game of the year to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The Pioneers started quickly getting two runs in the first and one in the third off Warrior starter Atlee Cahill. Leadoff hitter Melissa Medina had three infield singles in the first four innings, leading the offense, while Shannon Kulnis took Cahill deep to lead off the fifth. Medina then drove home the Pioneers’ fifth run with a RBI single up the middle in the seventh, her fourth knock of the day. Ashley Marchese then followed with a bases-clearing double, extending the lead to 9-0.

Cahill (2-3) threw her fourth complete game of the season, striking out four, in the loss.

The seventh inning killed the Warriors all day, as C.W. Post scored 11 times in the final inning in both games combined.

Merrimack (19-11, 12-4 NE-10) returns to Warrior Field Saturday when New Haven comes to town for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
