NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Merrimack (9-5, 2-0 NE-10) won their home opener doubleheader against St. Michael's College, 9-4 and 14-3, matching their total wins for last season.
In game one, the Warriors were down by four runs heading into the bottom of the third inning before putting three on the board, adding another six in the fifth inning. At the plate Merrimack had ten hits and sophomore Kara Melillo (North Andover, MA), junior Atlee Cahill (Gloucester, MA), and seniors Jill Richards (Bucksport, ME) and Jill Gagnon (Manchester, NH) each had two hits in the game.
On the hill, senior Gagnon went the distance pitching all seven. Gagnon struck out seven and only allowed three hits. After the Purple Knights scored their three runs, the only runner Gagnon allowed after the third inning came in the top of the seventh when she walked Meghan Colitti. Merrimack committed one error in the field.
In game two Merrimack did not waste any time and managed to put fourteen runs on the board to mercy rule the Purple Knights in five innings. Merrimack allowed only one run in the first inning before putting up fourteen runs by the second inning. At the plate freshman left fielder Monique Gosselin (Lawrence, MA) had two hits. Gosselin belted a single to right field in the first inning and her first triple of the season to right in the third. Also with two hits in the second game was sophomore catcher Melillo. She had a hit to center in the first and a hit down the left field in the third inning. Sophomore Kristen LeMay (Shrewsbury, MA) contributed with one hit and three RBIs.
Senior Vicky Cotter (Hampton, NH) got the start and the win on the mound for the Warriors. Cotter pitched three innings, striking out two. Junior Cahill came in for the fourth inning and struck out one of the three batters she faced. Freshman Alex Gallant (Salem, NH) came in for the fifth inning to finish off the game.
