CLERMONT, FL - The Merrimack softball team put two W's on the board in day one of play at the Dot Richardson National Training Center with fourteen hits and stellar pitching from seniors Jill Gagnon (Manchester, NH) and Vicky Cotter (Winnacunnet NH). The Warriors scored twelve runs in their first doubleheader of the season, beating Philadelphia University 5-1 in game one and St. Thomas Aquinas 7-2 in the second half of the night.
In game one, pitcher Jill Gagnon was 3-4 at the plate. The senior righty blasted two singles and a double to put three of Merrimack's five runs up. The Warriors had five hits in total and did not commit an error on the field.
To add to Gagnon's day, she pitched a complete game on the hill, striking out twelve. She allowed only four hits and one earned run before getting her first win of the season.
The Warriors did not miss a beat in game two against St. Thomas Aquinas. The Warriors posted seven runs and nine hits in seven innings. Of those hits, junior Kristen Lemay (Shrewsbury, MA) was 2-3 and Gagnon chipped in with another three RBIs and two doubles to help out the Warriors. In the field, Merrimack allowed its only error of the day.
Senior Vicky Cotter took the mound in game two for her first appearance of the season. Cotter retired six batters and allowed only two walks. She allowed seven hits from the Spartans and allowed only two runs to score, giving the Warriors their second win of the season.
Tomorrow Merrimack continues play taking on Queens at 11 a.m. followed by St. Thomas Aquinas at 1 p.m.
