Christensen Places Eighth; Men’s Cross Country Finishes Fourth at Codfish Bowl Saturday
SOPHOMORE CHRISTENSEN STRONG SATURDAY AS MEN'S XC PLACES FOURTH AT CODFISH BOWL
BOSTON – Sophomore runner Nick Christensen (Peabody, Mass.) led the way with an eighth-place finish out of 130 competitors, while the Merrimack men's cross country team finished in fourth place out of 10 teams at the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park in Boston on Saturday.
Standings: UMass Lowell (1) | Merrimack (4) | UMass Boston (10)
Top Finisher: Sophomore Nick Christensen (Peabody, Mass.) | 8th/130 | 26:43
Location: Franklin Park 5K Course | Boston, Mass.
How It Happened
Christensen and junior Luis Cruz (Lawrence, Mass.) represented Merrimack's top-two finishers, with the latter just missing a spot inside the top-10.
Christensen was the third-fastest collegiate runner on Saturday, as the men's side also ran against several other competitive racing teams and clubs unaffiliated with college programs with the sophomore ranking among the best competitors, finishing eighth overall with a time of 26:43.
Cruz, meanwhile, sat in 12th, six second behinds Christensen (26:49) to represent the only two Warriors placing inside the top-20.
In 25th, junior Sherif Ali (Cliffside Park, N.J.) crossed with a time of 27:09 before freshman Dan O'Flynn (Ipswich, Mass.) and junior Joey Smith (Medfield, Mass.) rounded out the Warriors' top-five in 38th and 44th place, respectively.
What They Said
Head Coach Chris Cameron: "For the men, we were also coming off two hard weeks so some of the men felt this in the race. Our 1-5 split was larger than in our first two races so we'll need to work on closing that in practice. Overall, both teams gave good efforts but they also understand that it's still early and that we need to work hard to be ready by the end of October and into November."
The Warriors will host their annual Alumni Meet next weekend, Oct. 5, on campus before gearing up for the New England Championships on Oct. 12.
