Track & Field Set to Begin Indoor Season Saturday at Harvard Open
Entering its second year of existence, the Merrimack indoor track and field program will kick of the 2011-12 campaign at the Harvard Open held at the Gordon Indoor Track December 10.
This winter, the Warriors have boosted their roster to 26 on the women's side and 27 on the men's.
Seniors John Doherty (Chelmsford, MA), Ethan Weaver (Brooklyn, CT) and Ian Weaver (Brooklyn, CT) will serve as captains of the men's team this winter. Rebecca Ainscow (Derry, NH), Kayla Morong (Topsham, ME) and Ashley Sarris (Shelton, CT) will lead the women's squad in 2011-12.
The Warriors had a very successful season a year ago in its first season of competition.
Josh Henry (Westport, CT) was Merrimack's lone USTFCCCA All-Region honoree last year. Henry set a new personal record in the triple jump at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship meet with a leap of 13.33 meters en route to a second place finish in the event.
The Warriors' men's and women's squads combined to post 53 NE-10 qualifying marks during the 2010-11 season. The women led the way with 30 qualifications while the men turned in 23 qualifying marks.
Merrimack will take part in three meets in January as it opens 2012 at the Tufts Invitational January 14. The Greater Boston Invitational and Terrier Classic are both on tap for the Warriors in January. The Valentine's Invitational February 11 is the final meet of the indoor regular season.
Merrimack will compete at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship February 18 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Last year, the Warriors garnered a pair of ninth place finishes at the league finale.
Head coach Matt Pimentel is in his second season at the helm of the Warriors' track and field programs.
