Chris Stevens completed his fifth season as head coach of the
Merrimack College men’s and women’s tennis teams in
2009-10. Stevens is the seventh men’s head coach and fifth
women’s head coach in program history.
In 2009-10, Stevens led the men's team to a program record third straight NCAA tournament appearance following a Northeast-10 Conference tournament Championship berth and a 10-1 record in Conference play.
Stevens coach a total of eight all-Conference players between the men's and women's teams in 2009-10. Caitlin Dunn and Tim McHugh each earned the Northeast-10 Conference F. Paul Bogan Memorial Sportsmanship Award on the women's and men's side, respectively.
In 2007-08, Stevens led the men’s tennis team to a 10-7
record and the team’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Six players were named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference team
while Stevens was named the Northeast-10 Men’s Tennis Coach
of the Year. The women’s team won 10 matches as well, setting
a school record, as four players were named to the All-Conference
team.
In 2006-07, Stevens guided the men’s squad to an 11-8
overall record and the women’s team to a 9-9 mark.
Seventeen of Stevens players have been named All-Northeast-10
since he came to Merrimack.
Since 2004, Stevens has served as the tennis director at Wentworth
By-The-Sea Country Club in Rye, New Hampshire. He is responsible
for managing the eight-court, year-round tennis facility while also
developing all junior and adult programs. He spends time teaching
and coaching the women’s USTA teams.
Prior to working at Wentworth, Stevens worked as the tennis
director at Cedardale Health Club, Ipswich Country Club, Brodie
Racquet Club (Williamstown, Mass.), and Albany Country Club
(Albany, N.Y.). He has also held positions as a head/assistant
professional at Cedardale, Albany and Hideaway Beach Club (Marco
Island, Fla.).
Stevens, a 1993 graduate of Springfield College, was recently
elected as Vice President for the USPTA New England Division. While
at Springfield, he captained the 1992 tennis team to a Northeast-10
Conference Championship.
