Men's Tennis Tops Adelphi, 5-1, Advances to NE-10 Finals


NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The first seeded Merrimack College men's tennis team defeated No. 4 seed Adelphi University, 5-1, in the Northeast-10 Championship semifinal round Thursday evening at the Northeast Tennis Center. The Warriors will advance to the Championship for the third-straight season, and improve to 13-7, while the Panthers drop to 11-7 on the season.

How it Happened

Merrimack held a 2-1 lead after doubles action. At No.1, sophomore Matt Pronesti (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and senior Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) eased to a 8-1 victory, while at No. 2, sophomore Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) prevailed with an 8-2 win. Adelphi's Chiwete Njokanma and Justin Vjunqco rallied for a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles over freshman James Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.).

The Warriors came out strong in singles play, taking the next three points to clinch advancement. Pronesti made it 3-1 with his 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win over Sander Brenner at No. 1, while C. Barnhart posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Ryan Villarruel. Belfort clinched the match with his 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 win over Sebastian Zapata at No. 2.
