Men's Tennis Pulls Out 5-4 Win at Queens (N.Y.)

WARRIORS DEFEAT KNIGHTS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND IMPROVE TO 7-6 OVERALL

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Merrimack College men's tennis team earned a huge road victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors downed Queens (N.Y.) College by the score of 5-4. With the win, Merrimack improves to 7-6 overall while the Knights drop to 7-2.

How it Happened vs. Queens (N.Y.)

The Knights grabbed a pair of victories in doubles play to grab a 2-1 lead at the beginning of singles action.

Freshman Nick Majewski (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) secured Merrimack's only doubles victory of the day. The Warriors' No. 3 duo posted an 8-0 win against Andrew Pizow and Howard Wong.

Senior Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) and freshman James Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) suffered an 8-6 loss at the No. 2 doubles spot while sophomore Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) and junior Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) dropped an 8-6 decision at the No. 1 doubles spot.

The Warriors picked up four of the six singles matches to take a 5-4 win over the Knights.

In No. 1 singles action, Belfort proved to be too much for his opponent as he finished with the 6-2, 6-3 win. After back-to-back losses for the Warriors, J. Barnhart got Merrimack back on track with his big victory over Kevin Burgess, 7-6, 6-3. Majewski also picked up a dominating win as he downed Adam Pizow by the score of 6-1, 6-1. In the final match, Sheikh came through with the 6-0, 6-0 win, to seel the non-conference road win for Merrimack.
