Men’s Tennis Bows to Eckerd, Falls at #15 Rollins Tuesday Afternoon

WARRIORS FALL TO TRITONS AND TARS TUESDAY IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –  The Merrimack College men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback at Division I Eckerd and a 8-1 loss at #15 Rollins Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors slip to 6-5 on the season while the Tritons improve to 3-9 overall and the Tars move to 6-7 with the win.

How it Happened: Merrimack vs. Eckerd

Eckerd claimed two of the three doubles matches to grasp a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore Matt Pronesti (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and senior Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) rolled to a 9-7 victory at the No. 1 doubles slot. Junior Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) and sophomore Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) were edged, 8-4, at the second position.

The Tritons captured four singles win to seal the non-conference victory.

Belfort prevailed at the No. 2 spot against Valuiskikh, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Chris Barnhart registered Merrimack's only other singles win of the day, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the No. 3 spot.

How it Happened: Merrimack vs. Rollins

In the Warriors' second match of the day, #15 Rollins claimed all three doubles points to hold a 3-0 lead at the beginning of singles action.

Bellino picked up Merrimack's lone point on the day with a 2-6, 7-5, 10-3 win at the No. 5 spot.

Pronesti absorbed a 6-4, 6-4 loss at the No. 1 position while C. Barnhart suffered a 6-0, 6-0 setback against 23rd nationally rank Robin Marchione. Belfort and freshman James Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) were defeated in the No. 3 and No. 4 spot, repectively. In the final match of the day, freshman Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) was defeated by a final score of 6-3, 6-1.
