Men's Tennis Wraps Up at ITA East Regionals on Monday

WARRIORS MAKE AN IMPACT AT ITA REGIONALS, MERRIMACK LOOKS AHEAD TO UCONN INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Coming off a strong showing at theBrown Invitational, and the team's two conference wins, the Merrimack men's tennis team advance far at the ITA Regional Championships, which showcases the best talent and players in the entire East.

How It Happened
Singles:  

Sophomore Miguel Belfort (Caracus, Venezuela) made it to third round of the A-Draw with a bye in the first round, and a tough win over Kiro from the University of DC (7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 11-9) in the second, but lost to the number one player from Chestnut Hill, Porter, by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Senior Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) made it to the quarterfinals of the A-Draw with wins over Chestnut Hill's number 3 player Moore (6-0, 6-3), NYIT's Lieb by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4, and Assumption College's number one player, Waung, 6-2, 6-1, before losing to Olfans, from Concordia by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Freshman James Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.) made it to the second round of the A-Draw with a bye in the first round, but lost the number two player in the tournament, Majauskas from Concordia by a score of 6-2, 6-1.  Majauskas eventually went on to at least play in the finals. Sophomore Matt Pronesti (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had a big upset in the A-Draw against Concordia's Babadjanov 6-3. 6-7, 10-7, before having to retire his second round match to the third seeded player in the tournament from NYIT, Auruccio (6-2, ret.) because of a shoulder injury.

Junior Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) had a great first round victor in the A-Draw against Bodi-Salen from AIC (6-4, 6-1), before losing to Southern NH's number one player, Dobek, in the second round (6-1, 6-1) who was the number five seed in the tournament. Freshman Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) made it to the semifinals of the B-Draw with great wins over Rauchie,  RWC (8-5), Metz, USP (8-3), and Ziegler, CAL (8-5), before to Jubera, NYIT 8-2.

Doubles:

Chris/Matt P won a great first round match in the A-Draw against Jubera/Peixoto, NYIT, before losing to a team from Concordia, Ojanen/Babdjanov. Chris and Matt were actually up 7-4 in this match before this standout Concordia team rallied to eventually win in a tiebreaker.

Miguel/Vince made it to the semifinals of the A-Draw with a bye in the first round, a win over Assumption's Litvinchuk/Brenner (8-1), and a win over NYIT's Lieb/Marcon (8-2) who were the 4th ranked team in the tournament. Miguel and Vince went on to lose in the semifinals against the number 1 team in the tournament Piludu/Majauskas, Concordia (8-4).

Jimmy/ Nick lost in the first round of the A-Draw in a tough match against Farres/Thorold from RWC (8-3)     

What They Said
"We came into the tournament with the goal of getting better and I believe we did that this weekend," said head coach Peter Arsenault.  "We still have a long road ahead of us to reach our ultimate goals. We look forward to the next challenge and look to build off our successes, and learn from our mistakes."

The Warrior's return to action this Friday, Sept. 27, when they travel to Storrs, Connecticut to participate in the UCONN Invitational all weekend.
