NORTH ANDOVER, MA– The Merrimack men's tennis team picked up their first conference victory of the season on Sunday as they downed Saint Michael's by the score of 9-0. With the win, Merrimack improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in NE-10 action, including 11 straight against NE-10 foes.
"I am very proud of how our guys came out and played today," said head coach Sean Tully. "We put an emphasis on our singles matches and we came through with six victories."
The Warriors dominated all the singles matches on the afternoon as they won all six in easy fashion. Freshman Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) was the most impressive Warrior, winning 6-0, 6-0. Fellow freshman Mark Mallory (Portland, OR) and Matt Pronesti (Mission Viejo, Calif.) both won their singles matches by the score of 6-1, 6-0. Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Chris Toegemann (Narragansett, RI) also picked up victories on Sunday by the score of 6-2, 60 and 6-3, 6-0 respectively.
The Warriors defeated the Purple Knights in all three double matches, as the freshman duo of Matt Lipinski (Arlington, Mass.) and Pronesti downed Thomson and Nichols by the score of 8-0. Barnhart and Bellino also downed their opponents by the score of 8-0. Toegemann and Mallory continued their strong play by defeating Brahm and Allen from Saint Michael's by the score of 8-2 to secure the victory.
Three Warriors also competed in the final day of the Brown Invitational on Sunday. Golijanin defeated his division I foe from Bryant by the score of 6-2, 6-1. Belfort downed his opponent from Colgate by the score of 6-3, 6-0 while Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) was defeated by Ginzberg from Uconn by the score of 6-3, 6-4.
Merrimack will return to action next weekend as they will take part in the ITA East Regional in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday and Sunday.
