Merrimack Tennis Ready For Start of 2012-13 Campaign
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Led by 2nd-year head coach and 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, Sean Tully, the Merrimack men's tennis team will open their 2012 schedule with a road match at Assumption on September 15 while the women will open up with Le Moyne on September 16.
"We are looking to build on the successes that we had last season," said Tully. "With added hard work and dedication I believe we have what it takes on the men's and women's side to make the NCAA tournament once again."
The men will then return home and try to duplicate their undefeated conference mark on September 16 as they will take on Saint Michaels. The women will travel to West Chester on September 21 for a non conference match.
On September 22 and 23, both teams will travel to the ITA East Regional's. The men will wrap up their fall season with the UConn Invitational on September 28 and 29 and then matches against St. Anselm and Franklin Pierce on September 30.
The women will close out their fall portion by traveling to Endicott for a non conference match and then visiting Saint Rose on September 29 and hosting Franklin Pierce on September 30.
"We are all very excited about our fall portion of the schedule," stated Tully. "Our hope is we can pick up some momentum in the fall season and continue it into the spring for a run at the Conference crown."
The men's team finished last season with a school record 18-8 record including an undefeated 10-0 mark in conference play. The Warriors were regular season and Conference Champions for the first time in school history and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season.
The women's team finished the 2011 season with a 9-14 overall record and an 8-5 conference mark, qualifying for the NE-10 Conference Tournament and falling in the first round to Southern New Hampshire.
The men's team returns four All-Conference players from last season, Petar Golijanin (Novi Sad, Serbia), who was first team all-conference in singles and doubles, Chris Barnhart (Longmeadow, Mass.), Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) and Chris Toegemann (Narragansett, RI). The Warriors will also welcome four incoming freshman to their defending NE-10 Conference Championship team.
On the women's side eight players return to a team that qualified for the NE-10 Tournament. The Warriors will be led by second team All-Conference member Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) and All-Rookie team member Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezula).
"We are looking forward to seeing the returners build on their success from last season," said Tully. "We will also be looking for our newcomers to step up and make strides to help us reach the ultimate goal."
