Philadelphia Ushers Men's Tennis out of NCAA Tournament Thursday

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men's tennis team (13-6) third straight trip to the NCAA tournament ended abruptly Thursday evening at Queens College when the Warriors were eliminated by Philadelphia University (20-6) 5-1 in the first round.

Falling behind early, Merrimack dropped all three doubles matches on Thursday before singles play began.  Although Merrimack held the advantage in a number of singles contests early on, the Rams advanced to the second round with singles wins at No. 2 and No. 6.

“Our slow start in doubles hurt us today,” said head coach Chris Stevens following the match.  “It was nice though to see the guys finish strong in singles.”

All-Conference sophomore Sean Pahler (Rumson, NJ) picked up the lone win for Merrimack at No. 4 singles in three sets to improve his singles winning streak to 11 after a perfect 10-0 Northeast-10 regular season that earned him first team all-Northeast-10 honors.

With the win, Philadelphia advance to the second round to play top-seeded Concordia College after the Clippers 5-0 sweep of Adelphi University on Thursday.

Without a senior on this year's Merrimack squad, Stevens and the Warriors have good reason to be optimistic for the 2010-11 season.

“We made some great improvements this season and we know what we need to work on to take it to the next level next season,” said Stevens.
