On September 25, the Merrimack men's soccer team partnered with GracePoint Church to host a free soccer clinic for the second straight year. The clinic drew over 100 children between the ages of six and 12 for the event. The players this year were almost equally divided between children from the Lawrence Youth Program and those from Andover Soccer Association.
Coaching again was led by head coach Tony Martone and assistant coach Mike Allen plus 14 of the Warrior players and seven coaches from the church. The players were divided into six groups of 15-20 players by age and gender. The children rotated through a number of different skill sessions throughout the afternoon.
During a refreshment break the children were treated to an exhibition game by the Merrimack players. After the session, the Warriors signed autographs for the appreciative kids. Each player received a t-shirt and draw-string backpack for their participation along with food and drink. Parents were also treated with free cold drinks and snacks.
"It is important for our team to help out with this clinic so that they get involved in the community," said Martone. "It was very rewarding to see how appreciative the kids were. It was a great day and the children had a blast learning the game and watching our guys play."
