Men's Soccer Earns NSCAA Team Academic Award

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- For the second year in a row, the Merrimack College men’s soccer team was recognized for its excellence in the classroom with the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 academic year.

To be eligible for the award, a team must own a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. The Warriors surpassed that mark and posted a 3.27 overall GPA last year, the highest in Tony Martone’s tenure as a head coach.

Nationally, a total of 640 soccer squads (196 men, 444 women) sported a 3.0 GPA or better during the 2009-10 academic year. Merrimack College was one of 133 teams from across the nation that had both its men’s and women’s soccer teams receive the recognition.

Majoring in business, junior co-captain Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, Ont.) led the team with a 3.87 GPA. Sabadoz paced the Warriors and the Northeast-10 Conference with 23 points on nine goals and five assists. Sabadoz was tabbed to the Northeast-10 All-Conference first team, Daktronics All-East Region first team and NSCAA All-East Region first team this season.

Merrimack boasted a 9-8-1 record on the year and went 5-7-1 in league action. The Warriors climbed as high as No. 14 in the NSCAA/ National Poll in the fall, knocking off No. 2 Southern N.H. along the way. Merrimack reached the Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinals, falling to No. 1 Franklin Pierce to close out the season.
