Mens Soccer Receives Fall 2009 Northeast-10 Sportsmanship Award

SOUTH EASTON, MA – The Northeast-10 Conference announced Merrimack College as the recipient of the fourth annual Fall 2009 Sportsmanship Award in men’s soccer. The awards program honors one team from each of the conference’s 23 championship sports that has exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and generally conducted themselves with a higher degree of integrity, character and class.
The Warriors of Merrimack finished the 2009 season under head
coach Tony Martone with their fifth straight
10-win season and sixth straight top-five finish with an 11-7-1
mark. Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year, Robbie
Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON), finished the season with a
program-record 19 goals to tie Rich Fleming, who set the
single-season mark in 1996.
The Northeast-10 awards one team from its 23 championship sports
with a ‘Team Sportsmanship Award’ at the end of each
season’s championship segment. The awards are decided upon by
a vote of each of the conference teams head coach, team captain and
Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative in their
respective sports.
Being honored for the first time was both the Merrimack College
men’s soccer team and the University of Massachusetts Lowell
women’s soccer team.
In June, one of the 16 conference institutions will receive the
‘David R. Brunk’ Award honoring institution
sportsmanship. Last year, Assumption College was selected as the
award recipient. Previous winners include Stonehill (2008) and
Saint Anselm (2007).
With 16 member institutions the Northeast-10 shares the
distinction of being the largest Division II conference in the
country along with the PSAC and WVIAC. Its 23 championship sports
provide athletic opportunities for over 5,500 student-athletes, the
largest such program of any Division II conference.
