Sabadoz Named NE-10 Player of the Year; Motta, Lortie and Lindhe Also Honored

EASTON, MA – Following his program record-setting 19 goals in just 16 games to help the Merrimack men’s soccer team to 11 wins and a postseason berth, sophomore Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON) was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year on Friday.
“He obviously had a great year
by the numbers he put up, but the most impressive thing is that he
missed the first two games of the season and came out so strong
from the time he set foot on the field,” said Head Coach
Tony Martone upon learning of the conference
awards on Friday afternoon.
Sabadoz’s 19 goals matched the Merrimack program-mark set by
Rich Fleming in 1996 and led all goal-scorers in the Northeast-10
in 2009. Of the 16 regular season games, Sabadoz recorded a point
in 13 and multiple goals in seven. Through the latter half of the
season, Sabadoz has also ranked in the top five goal scorers in the
nation, topping out at second a week ago.
Also receiving All-Conference recognition were senior captains
Greg Motta (Saunderstown, RI) and Kyle
Lortie (Middleboro, MA) who landed on the Second Team
after starting all 17 games they appeared in.
“There really is no midfielder more valuable to their team
in the Northeast-10 than Greg,” said Martone. “He
dictates the tempo of the game and is responsible for all the
success that we have enjoyed this year. Kyle is a special player to
have in the back. He gives his coach great piece of mind that the
defense is in good hands.”
One of four Warriors to play in all 18 regular season games,
freshman Olof Lindhe (Stockholm, Sweden) rounded
out the accolades with Third and All-Rookie Team recognition. His
three goals and five assists were a welcome addition to the
Merrimack front line and Martone’s lineup.
“Olof showed tremendous progression throughout the year. He
worked hard to improve his game all year and it certainly paid
off.”
Sabadoz and company look to lead Merrimack to a quarterfinal win
at Southern Connecticut on Sunday, November 1 at 1:00pm in New
Haven, Connecticut. With the playoff berth, the fifth-seeded
Warriors earned a 10-win season and postseason appearance for
Merrimack for the fifth straight year.
