NORTH ANDOVER, MA - A season that saw the Merrimack men's soccer team win 11 games and earn a sixth straight top-five finish in the Northeast-10 Conference shows promise for years to come in North Andover.

In addition to his program record-tying 19 goals (Rich Fleming; 2006), sophomore Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON) captured this program's first Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year award since Steve MacAuliffe in 1997.  A top-notch individual in the classroom, Sabadoz was recognized on the CoSIDA All-District Academic Team as well for his 3.85 grade point average as a business major.

Joining Sabadoz on the Northeast-10 All-Conference team were seniors Kyle Lortie (Middleboro, MA) and Greg Motta (Saunderstown, RI) and freshman Olof Lindhe (Stockholm, Sweden).

The season ended with a tough 2-1 loss at Southern Connecticut in the playoffs in a game that was indicative of the season as a whole. Merrimack conceded an early goal then proceeded to dominate the game during which the Warriors struck the post twice, missed a breakaway and had a ball cleared off the line with their keeper beaten and a chance to send the game into overtime.

Going forward, the men's soccer program is promising. Although four seniors graduate this coming May, Merrimack is a young team with many solid players returning. Should their current players meet their potential, the team looks to compete for a Conference title and regional and national prominence.

In other program news, the 2008-09 Warriors will be recognized as an Academic All-American Team by the NSCAA at the upcoming convention in Philadelphia in January. The team had a cumulative GPA of 3.1.

For the past several years, the men's soccer team has taken part as a team in many community service projects. This year, they are undertaking an initiative called Adopt-A-Platoon. While raising funds to buy food, clothing, reading material and other items for US soldiers stationed overseas, players and soldiers will be exchanging correspondence as part of the program to provide moral and emotional support.

A few weeks ago, the six-on-six tournament in memory of Nick Perretti was held and proved to be a huge success, both in terms of attendance as well as funds raised. A total of $ 4,400 was generated for the scholarship fund. Future plans also call for a memorial golf tournament to be tentatively held at the beginning of August.

With the 2009 season in the books, Head Coach Tony Martone has begun recruiting his 29th class of Warriors.
