Men’s Soccer Falls to Franklin Pierce 2-1 on Senior Day

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men’s soccer team, ranked eighth in the east region, lost to the defending National Champion Franklin Pierce 2-1 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Warrior Field.

Merrimack got on the board first, as Greg Motta headed in a Wayne Sygrove corner kick for his third of the season just eight minutes into the game.

But the Ravens fought back, as Viktor Goncalves netted his 10th of the season as he took a Sean Ahern feed and beat Rob Pedra at 29:16. Eight minutes into the second half, Goncalves emerged from a scramble in front and beat Pedra near side for his second of the game.

This match was a highly-contested battle, featuring six yellow cards, including five in the second half.

Motta led the way with three shots for the Warriors. Franklin Pierce outshot Merrimack 14-to-6, with Pedra making four saves.

Before the game, Merrimack honored its six seniors, Rob Pedra, Tiago Dalboni, Matt Sanderson, Wayne Sygrove, Eric Gomes, and Martin Gabadian as part of Senior Day.

The Warriors (9-4-3, 6-4-2 NE-10) close the regular season at Stonehill on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before opening conference tournament play in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
