NORTH ANDOVER, MA - The Merrimack men's soccer team, ranked eighth nationally and first in the east region, snapped its two-game winless streak with a convincing 3-0 victory over Dominican College Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Merrimack Invitational.
The Warriors finish the tournament 1-0-1, while Dominican posted a 1-1 record.
Merrimack struck early and often as Wayne Sygrove (Yorkshire, England) one-timed a pass from Matt Sanderson (Saugus, MA) past a sprawling Brandon Heembrock for his fourth of the season. Just 3:30 later, freshman Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON) intercepted a pass from a Dominican defender and buried a breakaway for his team-leading fifth of the year.
Senior Eric Gomes (Stoughton, MA) put the game away, heading in a corner off the boot of Sanderson for his first of the season.
The hosts dominated throughout, firing 10 shots-on-goal to Dominican's two. After getting yesterday's game off, goalkeeper Rob Pedra (South Hamilton, MA) earned his second shutout with two saves, as the Warrior defense limited the Chargers' opportunities.
In the earlier game, Johan Pineda and Eurica Towers scored, propelling Post University to a 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm. Giuseppe La Rocca scored the lone goal for the Hawks. Post finished 1-0-1 at the tournament, while the Hawks were 0-2.
Merrimack (4-1-1, 1-1 NE-10) is at Bentley College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
