NORTH ANDOVER, MA - The Merrimack men's soccer team, ranked eighth in the nation and first in the east region, saw its three-game winning streak snapped by UMass Lowell 2-1 Wednesday night at a rowdy Warrior Field.
Matt Dubois scored the first goal off a corner kick from Matias Pietropinto in the 57th minute for his fourth of the season. Jeffery Danso added what proved to be the go-ahead marker in the 77th minute as he took a feed from Jamie Wangia and broke behind the defense for his third of the year.
Wayne Sygrove (Yorkshire, England) picked up his third of the season on a free kick in the 81st minute from just outside the box.
Merrimack had its chances as Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON), who scored in each of the first three games of the season, had a partial breakaway in the 87th minute but was stopped by a sprawling goaltender Ryan Richards. Merrimack had a free kick at the side of the box with 16 seconds remaining but Sygrove's centering kick failed to connect with a Warrior head.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half as UMass Lowell outshot the Warriors 7-2 but Rob Pedra (South Hamilton, MA) stopped three shots to keep the match scoreless.
Pedra stopped three shots in the loss, as the Warriors were outshot 15-8.
Merrimack (3-1, 1-1 NE-10) hosts the Merrimack Invitational this weekend with the Warriors playing Post on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Dominican on Sunday (2 p.m.).
