NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Merrimack alum and men’s lacrosse head coach Mike Morgan (Merrimack ’00) has finalized a new contract to continue leading the Warriors, as announced by Dean O’ Keefe, Interim Director of Athletics. Morgan is entering his sixth season as Merrimack’s head coach and 12th year with the program, including two years as an assistant coach and four as a student-athlete.
“Mike has a proven ability to consistently lead Merrimack to regional and national prominence while maintaining our emphasis on academic integrity, character, and community involvement,” said O’Keefe. “As one of the most successful and sought after young head coaches in the game, we are very pleased to have Coach Morgan continue his role at Merrimack going forward.”
In his first five seasons, Morgan guided Merrimack to its first-ever NCAA Final Four in 2009, a Northeast-10 Tournament Championship in 2010 and an appearance in four straight NE-10 Championship games dating back to 2009.
The Northeast-10 Coach of the Year in 2008, Morgan became the first head coach in NCAA Division II men’s lacrosse history to win 50 games in his first four seasons after defeating Le Moyne in Syracuse on May 6, 2011.
“I sincerely appreciate the continued support that President Hopey and the College provide for our program,” said Morgan. “It is an exciting time to be at Merrimack College, and I look forward to helping build on our current momentum as the College continues to grow. I am honored by the opportunity to continue leading my alma mater, and I am excited to further the growth of our program and our commitment to excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.”
As part of his new contract responsibilities, Morgan will relinquish his athletic department business manager duties to further focus his efforts on directing the lacrosse program.
In five seasons as head coach, Morgan owns a 63-19 career record after guiding Merrimack to a 13-3 mark in 2012.
Morgan has produced eight All-Americans and three Northeast-10 Players of the Year in his five seasons, headlined by Greg Rogowski (Cohoes, NY) and Nick Maggio (Winchester, MA) both of whom have gone on to play Major League Lacrosse.
Off the field, the men’s lacrosse team recorded a 3.09 GPA in the spring semester of 2012, its highest performance in the classroom under Morgan. Morgan’s student-athletes are also fixtures in the community, volunteering in the Adopt a Platoon Effort, which strives to provide a better deployment quality of life to our troops by sending care packages and letters.
A 2000 graduate of Merrimack, Morgan was an All-American midfielder in 2000 and New England Player of the Year, guiding Merrimack to its first-ever Northeast-10 Championship.
